Reducing Paper Usage at Smith College

چکیده

Smith College, as an educational institution, uses a considerable amount of paper. A significant portion of this consumption, however, is unnecessary. This study focused on needless printing from computers. Based on the testimony of computer lab consultants, thousands of sheets of paper are wasted daily college-wide. Efforts to reduce paper usage at four other colleges were investigated. Smith College can adopt more sustainable paper use practices by installing computer printers with duplexing capabilities, charging for printing, educating students and staff about printing options, announcing events electronically, and purchasing copy paper with significant postconsumer content. Introduction The paper manufacturing industry has had a major impact on the environment. It uses four percent of the world’s energy, making the industry the fifth largest energy consumer (Abramovitz & Mattoon, 1999). Ten kilowatts per hour is required to produce one ream of paper (Stein, 1997). Twenty percent of all wood harvested is used for making paper. The destruction of trees leads to soil erosion and species loss. Air pollutants such as nitrous oxide, sulfur oxide, and carbon dioxide are released during the paper making process, which contribute to acid rain and global warming. The bleaching process sends toxic chemicals like dioxins and chloroform into water supplies. The paper industry uses more water per ton of product than any other industry (Abramovitz & Mattoon, 1999). The transportation of lumber and finished paper products further contributes to pollution and energy consumption.

How Green is My House? Co-operative vs. traditional housing at Smith College

The Smith housing system — small houses with students from all class years — is one of the school's greatest assets and sources of pride. But from the point of view of sustainability, it’s inefficient. In this study, I examined the two types of housing available at Smith — co-operative and traditional — to determine which is potentially more sustainable, or “greener.” In the co-ops, students ar...

A second multiple screening clinic in rural general practice.

THE basic principle of multiple screening is to detect certain diseases in an early stage when they are readily treatable thus reducing their mortality. Additionally, screen¬ ing should aim at detecting those patients with incipient degenerative diseases so that their sequelae can be minimized and their morbidity reduced. Since our previous paper (Cope and Smith, 1967) describing A health week ...

College Science in India

The reduction in number of electrodes usage is a significant advancement in Brain computer Interface (BCI) research if not compromised with quality. The two major advantages of reducing the number of electrodes are the operational flexibility and reduction of volume in the feature date involved. The experiment results of a BCI are analyzed with two different electrode configurations and the fin...

Religion and Spirituality: Adam Smith versus J-J Rousseau

However, close consideration of their writings on religion reveal marked difference. This paper explores those differences and finds that Rousseau and Smith are radically at odds on this score. Smith has almost...
